Elena Turns 18 In Season 3

The Vampire Diaries' executive producer Julie Plec has revealed that Elena will turn 18 next season.

Plec told TV Guide that Elena (Nina Dobrev) will be celebrating her birthday when the show returns for its third season.

"There will be a small time jump [from where last season ended] as we celebrate Elena's birthday," she teased. "But as is the pattern in Mystic Falls, the event never reaches its climax."

Plec added: "[Now that she is 18], Elena and Jeremy technically don't need a parent living in their house. She will be taking care of herself."

Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder, who plays Damon, are currently thought to be dating but Plec revealed that their on screen relationship may be more complicated.

"Over the course of the season, Elena will be struggling with a deep, deep attraction for Damon," she said. "That's going to be a big problem for her."

The Vampire Diaries returns for a new season on September 15 on The CW
